Applications now being accepted for internship, volunteer positions

Applications are now being accepted for internship and volunteer positions for an exciting, groundbreaking new program.

Coming in 2021, Sylvania City & Township will finally be included in Ohio’s digital library program, Ohio Memory.  Sylvania is being represented by a partnership between the Toledo Lucas County Public Library, Sylvania Schools, and Sylvania History Buffs.

Work on the new Sylvania collection begins with the new year, and starts with volunteer training for adults and student interns that will take place in downtown Toledo at the Main Branch of the Toledo Library.

Sylvania City and Township residents who are students (high school or college), age 17-24, may apply for acceptance into the student internship program beginning Friday December 11, 2020.

To begin the process, students must review the requirements (click here) and internship overview (click here).  Adults and non-students over age 21 who would like to participate and go through through volunteer training can also apply.  After reviewing the documentation above, prospective applicants who feel they are a good fit for this position should send their curriculum vitae to the Internship Coordinator at Support@SylvaniaHistoryBuffs.org.

Established in 2000, the mission of Ohio Memory is to help communities share, discover and connect to Ohio’s rich past through dynamic online resources.  Ohio Memory is the collaborative statewide digital library program of the Ohio History Connection/the Ohio Historical Society and the State Library of Ohio. This website allows anyone, for free, to explore digital content from over 390 cultural heritage institutions representing all 88 of Ohio’s counties covering a wide range of topics from prehistory to present day.

Ohio Memory contains over 1,000,000 digital images from a variety of primary and secondary source image types, including photographs, maps, drawings and paintings, manuscripts, letters, diaries and journals, archaeological artifacts, historical objects, newspapers, books and more.

Currently, there are only a handful of random documents that mention Sylvania included in the Ohio Memory website.  The Archive Project is uploading Sylvania Schools yearbooks, documents, and photographs, plus newspapers and submissions from the community.  Sylvania residents, past and present, who have materials they would like scanned and included in the new collection at Ohio Memory should contact Support@SylvaniaHistoryBuffs.org. Old business materials are also welcome.

Materials are selected for inclusion on the Ohio Memory site based on historical significance, scanning potential, complementary value, and ownership and copyright.  Sylvania’s volunteers will be trained in all these facets and also the proper techniques of archival, rare, fragile & historical document scanning.  Much of the work will be done on the Toledo Library’s scanner in the Local History Department, a $30,000 piece of equipment larger than a refrigerator.

Ohio Memory is part of an ongoing partnership between the Ohio History Connection and the State Library of Ohio. The project offers subscription-based opportunities for partners around the state to submit their own material to the digital collection, which allows Ohio Memory to be largely self-sustaining and increase other institutions’ opportunities to share their unique materials with their communities, state and beyond.

Ohio Memory is made possible with funds from the Ohio History Connection, the State Library of Ohio, participating institutions, and grants and donations.  For Sylvania, The Archive Project must secure its own funding for its participation, and seeks to raise funds through premium memberships, gifts of support, and purchases made at The Sylvania Shop at SylvaniaHistoryBuffs.org. and SimplySylvania.org.

Much-needed support for The Archive Project is welcome and appreciated.  A limited number of the Sautter’s Special local history book have been donated to be given as a gift to those who make a $25 donation, a  button has been provided below for convenience.

Thank you for supporting the preservation of Sylvania's rich history.
