On Monday, Jan. 27, the Sylvania Franciscan Village (SFV) kicks off its 9th annual Have a Heart Restock Drive to supply personal care items to seven human service agencies and outreach programs: Bethany House, Claver House, Family House, Helping Hands of St. Louis, Our Lady of Lourdes Outreach Soup Kitchen, Sylvania Area Family Services and Toledo Street Newspaper.
The collection drive runs Jan. 27 – Feb. 6, with items being distributed on Feb. 7. Individuals are encouraged to drop off unused personal care items, such as deodorant, dental products, feminine hygiene items and toilet paper, at donation boxes on the campus of the Sisters of St. Francis and Lourdes University, Sylvania Public Schools, Sylvania St. Joseph’s Elementary, and select local businesses. A complete list of collection sites can be found at www.sylvaniafranciscanvillage.org. All donations of unused personal care items go directly to the agencies and those they serve.
John Keegan, program director for the Toledo Street Newspaper, said hygiene products are beneficial to recipients both physically and emotionally.
“Staying clean plays a powerful role in a positive self-perception,” Keegan said. “Deodorant, shaving cream and feminine hygiene products are always in high demand.”
They’re especially in demand this time of year.
“It’s important to assist our local outreach organizations after the holidays, when their supplies are often seriously depleted,” Sophia Lloyd, director of the SFV, said. “This drive is a way to give them a clean start for the New Year.”
Last year’s Have a Heart Restock Drive achieved its goal of collecting 2,500 rolls of toilet paper, Lloyd said, and organizers hope to exceed that for 2020.
