Lourdes University
Lourdes Students Use Art to Help Individuals Living with Dementia

Eleven Psychology students at Lourdes University are working with residents at the Rosary Care Center, 6832 Convent Blvd. in Sylvania, OH.

In the Opening Minds Through Art Program, individuals with a dementia diagnosis (artists) are paired with volunteers (students) who are trained to focus on strengths of the individuals rather than their diagnosis. Lourdes students enrolled in Psychology 442 will work with Rosary Care residents through the end of the Fall 2019 semester. Dr. Larry Godfrey, Lourdes Psychology Instructor says it’s amazing to see both students and residents be transformed by spending time with one another. “I admire my resident so much and am inspired by her. I am so glad I was able to take this class and expand my mind and my heart.”—Kennedy Ames, Lourdes Psychology 442 student.

Opening Minds through Art (OMA), part of the Scripps Gerontology Center, has been awarded a grant from the Ohio Department of Medicaid to expand its program in the state of Ohio. The grant enables Ohio nursing homes to apply for startup funding to adopt the program. Nursing homes such as Rosary Care Center will receive $1,500 for art supplies, travel and training. OMA is an award-winning, evidence-based, intergenerational program, providing opportunities for creative self-expression for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of neuro-cognitive disorders.

“We decided to implement OMA because it builds on our shared Franciscan value of community, and provides a meaningful intergenerational experience for Lourdes University students and the residents of Rosary Care Center.” says Sophia Lloyd, Director of the Sylvania Franciscan Village who wrote the grant.
