Flag Placing begins Wednesday May 26, with the public welcome to join in at Toledo Memorial Park (TMP) and place an American Flag on each of the 14,100 graves of our veterans.

“Anybody can come and do it.  If you want to come and put flags out, I'll give you a section," says Jim Lyell, who has been overseeing the placement of flags on Memorial Day to honor veterans since 1998.  "My flags have to be put out rain or shine."

Lyell is a veteran himself, having been drafted and sent to Vietnam.  He served two years, and came home in 1961.  He has been devoted to honoring his fellow soldiers since the day he stepped back on American soil.

"There’s some of us that give a little.  But there’s some of us that give a lot.  And give it all," Lyell says thoughtfully.   "And that’s why we’re there next week, putting out the flags.”

Lyell also saves the flags after they come down on the Tuesday after Memorial Day, and he offers them for free to any individual, group, neighborhood, or business wanting to display the flags.

"It’s just moving," shares Jeff Clegg, President and CEO of Toledo Memorial Park.  "That all these people will come out and honor those who have served our country.  It’s very moving to see that sight and to know that all of these volunteers come out and do this, and put 14,000 flags out.  Is a big deal for me."

This is Clegg's tenth Memorial Day with TMP, and after the event was cancelled last year due to Covid he is looking forward to this year's flag placing and ceremony with great enthusiasm.

"Toledo Memorial Park was founded in 1922, right after the end of World War I," explains Clegg.  "The big tower where we have our event was erected for the veterans of World War I.  That’s where our veterans section is, and our cemetery actually has the most veterans of anywhere in this area.  So when you see those 14,000 flags placed all throughout the cemetery, especially in that veterans section where it’s just solid flags, and we call it our sea of flags, it is so moving."

Clegg says that this is the biggest day of the year for TMP, and that as soon as the weather breaks after winter they all work overtime every day up until Memorial Day, just to get to the park ready for that one day.  But, it is all worth it.

"It's amazing, the outpouring of support," adds Clegg.  "It takes three days to do it, and we can’t thank the volunteers enough, because we could never do it on our own.  We see school groups, veterans groups, businesses.  You’ll see parents with their children, teaching them about veterans and the price that they paid. So it’s just really cool.  It really is."

Dress for the weather, and head straight to the very back of the park when you arrive at TMP.   Say "Hello" to Jim Lyell as he gives you a map, and your flags, and join the hundreds of Sylvanians honoring our veterans this year.  Jim will be there 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, ready to greet you with a smile.
