The area’s best fireworks show and party, Sylvania’s “Star Spangled Celebration” will be held on Saturday, July 3, from 7:00 p.m – 11:00 p.m. at Centennial Terrace. Centennial Terrace is located at 5773 Centennial Rd., at the intersection of Centennial Rd. and Erie St. in Sylvania. The event is co-sponsored by the City of Sylvania, Sylvania Township, many local sponsors and the Sylvania Recreation District.
There have been a few slight modifications from previous years, according to Mike McMahon, Operations Manager for Sylvania Recreation.
“Probably the most recognizable change is that we will be selling tables in advance for up to eight people,” said McMahon. “So if you want to get some family, friends, and neighbors together, you can buy a table for eight for $80, and that table will be reserved for you when you get to the event.”
Centennial Terrace is initially putting fifty tables on sale, but can add up to twenty more if needed. Previous years have seen ticket sales at the door only, on a first-come first-served basis.
Continuing a popular element of previous celebrations, a local radio station will be doing a simulcast during the fireworks display.
“The River will be playing a soundtrack,” explained McMahon. “So if you are listening in your car, or your backyard, or you’re at Centennial Terrace, 101.5 the River will broadcasting that soundtrack during the fireworks show.”
There will also be live music at Centennial Terrace, provided by 56Daze, and dancing, clowns, and food and beverages.
“It’s the highlight of the summer for a lot of people, and one of our premier events, so to not open our doors at all last year was very disappointing,” McMahon said, recalling the cancellation of last year’s fireworks and so many other local events.
“It’s been a gradual reopening, a little bit of good news here, a little bit of good news there, going back to early spring,” said McMahon. “And then once we heard the news that the governor was lifting all restrictions as of June 2, that was probably the best news we’ve heard in a long time.”
McMahon stated that there was no trouble or difficulty in obtaining fireworks for the event. The fireworks were already in the planning stages before Governor DeWine’s announcement, but it would have looked different, with restrictions in place.
“We are excited to be able to celebrate the independence of our country in this way, after such a long pause over the last 18 months or so,” added McMahon. “And this is one of the most exciting events that we do, because it is a true collaboration between the City, the Township, and the Recreation District.”
Sylvania Township Police, City of Sylvania Police, and the Sylvania Township Fire Department will be working closely together for the event, and to maintain traffic to and from the event. Centennial Terrace is currently in Sylvania Township. The City of Sylvania is in the process of annexing Centennial Terrace, but that has not been finalized.
