Northview/Southview students come together to show a local family that "Sylvania Cares."

On Friday January 31, the Sylvania Northview and Sylvania Southview varsity basketball teams will meet for the big cross-town rivalry.  But while the teams will be facing off on the court, Northview and Southview student council members will be coming together on the sidelines for an event called "Sylvania Cares."

Ten members of the Northview and Southview Student Councils joined together to form "Sylvania Cares" last year when student Grace Donaldson, who had heard of a Southview family dealing with cancer, wanted to create a way for everyone to help the family out.

This year the "Sylvania Cares" program is raising money for a Highland Elementary family battling cancer.

Lindsey Carlton, a mother and a very active volunteer in Sylvania Schools, has been battling stage 4 squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck for over a year.  Carlton has two sons who attend Highland Elementary school.

Five hundred special T-shirts, maroon in color, were designed for the event this year, and they have been on sale at the schools all week ($7.00) and will be available for purchase during the basketball game ($10.00) on Friday night.  The student section theme for the big game will be a "maroon out" in support of the Carlton family.  There will be buckets going around for donations during the game, and in addition, Chick-Fil-A is bringing 200 of their sandwiches to sell in concessions.  All of the profits from the Chick-Fil-A sandwiches will go to the Carlton family.

It is not necessary to attend the basketball game in order to donate to the Carlton family.  Anyone who wishes to purchase a T-shirt or donate to the Carlton family can contact adviser Tami Blue at
